Restoring Old Kitchen Masterpieces

Most people are unaware that it is possible that old, unused kitchen cabinets, supposedly ready for the dump, to be salvaged and still be made useful. Depending on the material used for these old cabinets, after some cleaning off and resurfacing/refacing, they could end up looking like new if not even better!!

In order to get started, you have to shop around for a piece that you deem to be a good candidate for restoration. Shopping for the piece yourself makes things more interesting. There is also a feeling of fulfillment involved once you know you had a hand in the restoration from the very beginning.

Certain types of wood are better candidates for restoration than others. Some wooden surface gets better as they age and the passage of time tends to bring out their better properties and luster.

The ideal types of wood are:

- Oak - Maple - Hickory

Aside from being a very affordable option to redecorate your kitchen, recycling these old cabinets and giving them a new lease on life does well for the environment. Recycling creates a lesser dependence on new timber thereby making for a very environment-friendly approach to redecorating your kitchen.

Most of these old pieces could be found at your local dumpster and by saving them from being scrapped, they will be of less of a burden to the environment.

Some individuals even make a living out of these old cabinets; these are the 'salvagers'. Though, admittedly, their line of business is not as lucrative as your average woodworking shop. More often than not, they are in it for the passion and not necessarily as a source of income.

They would look for unused cabinets at the local dumpster, garage sales and even on the internet. Once they find a piece worthy of a makeover, they work extensive hours to restore these old masterpieces to their former glory and re-sell them. These salvagers are exquisite craftsmen and are excellent woodworkers.

Coming across these salvagers is a bit difficult especially if you're far from a city. However, due to recent technological advances and the advent of the Internet and the World Wide Web, some of these 'salvagers' now advertise their services online . This makes finding and connecting with them a lot easier.

Some of the salvaged cabinets include some built-in facilities often found in customized cabinets. This may include:

- Cutlery divider - Multi storage pantry - A pull out pantry

Here are a couple of tips when buying used Kitchen cabinets:

1. Buy only from a reputed dealer or re-seller - doing so ensures that you're not just getting 're-furbished junk' but a wonderfully restored masterpiece. A recognized reseller will, more often than not, guarantee the quality of their work. Their reputation will often precede them. 2. Take measurements of dimension and weight - restored kitchen cabinets are often made of durable hardwood and this makes them heavy. Make sure that what you're getting will not only fit your budget but also your available kitchen space. Taking weight into consideration makes shipping and installing the cabinet a less stressful affair.

However you decide to go about getting your very own restored cabinet, it will be worth it for you to know that, not only are you getting a good deal and upgrading your kitchen, you are also doing the environment a great favor at the same time. That alone should be worth all the effort you'll be putting in to the project!
