Give Your Kitchen Cabinets A Makeover

The kitchen is the heart of a home. But while it is the busiest part, it is often neglected and outdated.

Renovating the kitchen can cost a lot. But you will be amazed to know that how you can give your kitchen a new look without spending much. Here are some tips on how to refresh your kitchen cabinets. But before you do any work on them, you would have to clean them first. Take everything out of the cabinets. Then clean off all the grease and dirt by scrubbing them well with a cleaner. Check the hinges and fix all breaks and cracks. Any aesthetic improvement would be useless if the cabinets are not functioning well.

Give your cabinets a repaint. Choose a color that would match the walls and decorations of the kitchen. You can also choose a color palette for the kitchen from your existing decors, curtains or table cloth. Or you can choose a fabric that you like and buy enough of it to make curtains and table cloth. Take colors from the design of your curtains. Choose two colors, one lighter than the other. The two colors must match well. Tape off a 2 inch border and paint one color on the inside and the other color on the other side. Or you can paint the doors with one color and the rest with the other color. In choosing your colors, consider the kitchen walls also. If the walls look too dull or the paint has chipped off, you should consider repainting them too. From the color of the fabric, choose an accenting color for the walls. Just make sure that the contrast is not too loud.

Re-face your cabinets. This way is simpler and less costly than refinishing or replacing the cabinets altogether. Drawer fronts and doors are removed and repainted. The interior pieces of the cabinets are then coated with a clean finish. The functional hardware of the doors can also be changed by using glass panel doors instead of wood. Another option is not to replace the entire door but only the center part of it with frosted or stained glass. If your cabinet has knobs or handles, clean them well or buy new ones.

Another option is to refinish your cabinets. Refinishing is done with either painted or varnished finishes. After cleaning the cabinets, sand them or use paint stripper. This should be done after cleaning the cabinets. Otherwise, it will simply embed the dirt and grime deeper into the old finish. Apply the finish using a brush or spray. Paint the doors first, the drawers next, and the frames last. Refinishing, however, is more costly and would take a longer time to finish. If you have the money, there is the option of hiring a professional to do the job. While it would cost more, there is the assurance of better and prompt results.

Refreshing your kitchen cabinets can be fun and inexpensive. The options are limitless. The important thing is to know what you want and how it is to be done. Take time to check for sample ideas and colors that you like before you start on anything. Not only have you updated your kitchen, you have also improved the value of your house at a much lesser cost.
